End of Summer Fun: Brooklyn Flea & AfroPunk

We took a mental break over the weekend for a little end of the summer fun at the Brooklyn Flea & AfroPunk in Brooklyn!  I spent a few hours at the Brooklyn Flea on Sunday and scored so many fabulous finds.  The flea market is held every Sunday in Dumbo and features quality vendors of furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles and antiques.  A few of my favorite vintage vendors who exhibit at the Manhattan Vintage Show exhibit at the Sunday Flea Market as well.  One in particular, had the most amazing vintage wide leg pantsuit that I scored for $40.  The pantsuit reminds me of something Willona Woods would have rocked on Good Times, yaaaas!

The highlight of my NYC solo weekend trip was finding these three vintage albums at the Brooklyn Flea. Jazz music, in particular John Coltrane soothes the soul.  Thrifting and vintage shopping in New York is our favorite pastime, and we are currently finalizing the logistics for the Modage Style Holiday Inspired Fashion Bus Tour right before Christmas!

While in Brooklyn, I was able to reserve the most immaculate brownstone compliments of Airbnb and my hostess Ms. Verna was the absolute best.

Prior to stopping by AfroPunk, I visited SoCo in Brooklyn for a quick bite and the food was delicious.  I opted for the Clinton Hill Omelette with White Cheddar Grits and a Hibiscus Margarita.  The vibe was chill, the music was amazing and the service was stellar.

This was my first Afro Punk experience and I definitely plan to return next year.  The personal style was truly on another level.

Fun times with my sister-in-fashion Selina Howard of Vainglorious Brides.

My entire look was snagged while resale shopping (except my sandals).

I adore my custom Ankh and Cowrie Shell rings by Enoch The Jeweler of Those Brothers Jewelry at AfroPunk.

Such an epic weekend and Janelle Monáe had the crowd groovin’.  This was the perfect end of summer fun and Brooklyn was such a great host.

Vintage Vibes | DC Goodwill Fashion

Be kind to the Earth & buy more vintage.

The MODAGE Style rack was such a huge hit at DC Goodwill #edited4goodwill VIP Trunk Show last night.  The vintage vibes were strong and the DC Goodwill Fashion was on major overload.  Many of the VIP attendees loved our carefully curated finds so much that we had to replenish our clothing rack several times and re-dress our mannequin.

What We Scored | National Thrift Shop Day‬

As a follow up to our previous post, we promised to update you on what we scored on National Thrift Shop Day.  Yesterday, while visiting Value Thrift Store located in Bladensburg, Maryland, we snagged these brand new Frye boots which have a retail value of $280.  Of course, we purchased them for a whopping $25!!

Prior to purchasing and scouring the racks for additional gently worn goodies, we did a little internet research and discovered that these leather beauties are called Frye Veronica Slouch. They fit and look amazing paired with skinny jeans or a skirt with a fitted vintage tee and motorcycle jacket.  Let us count the ways in which we intend to style these cuties during the cooler months.

Bound to become an indispensable part of our signature style, they look like a rugged yet chic pair of boots that were destined to join our style armoire.  These boots are made very well and the leather looks and feels like butter. Frye’s 150-year-old heritage of quality leatherwork is evident in every detail.

Hurry up Fall 💛💛💛

National Thrift Shop Day

We are extremely excited that tomorrow is National Thrift Shop Day!  National Thrift Shop Day is celebrated throughout the United States and takes place on August 17, 2016 this year.  Many of our favorite resale shops will offer special discounts and incentives, such as Savers and Goodwill.

In celebration of National Thrift Store Day, here are a few helpful tips that will enhance your resale shopping experience:

  1. Wear your resale uniform: Black leggings, black top and comfy shoes.  Think of the infamous all black outfit Audrey Hepburn rocked that screamed “effortless style.”  Another option is a fitted top and skirt that can be removed with ease.  This will allow you to play dress up without getting fully undressed.  The dressing rooms during discount days and events can be very busy, so you want to be prepared.  Also, leave your big totes at home and bring either a crossbody bag or backpack to free up your hands while scouring the racks.

  1. Building your Fall/Winter wardrobe should be fun because you are basically purchasing items for a fraction of the original price {that alone is winning, so no stressing}! Make a fashionable transition with ease by having a sound vision {a.k.a. resale wish list}, a set budget, and patience.  Create a mood board (see below) or jot down a few “must have” items that are required for the upcoming fashion season.  Remember to shop with a purpose and only purchase what you need.
Resale WishList - Summer

Here’s our Summer Resale Wish List. Feel free to share yours with us at @MODAGE_Style on Twitter.

  1. Be on the lookout for Fall/Winter finds that can enhance your wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color, patterns and various textures that you normally wouldn’t entertain.  For example, now is the time to find stylish blazer and one-of-a-kind leather vintage coats. Trust me, we have been snagging them weekly.  Pictures forthcoming. Waiting for the weather to turn frigid to begin resale shopping for these items can be stressful.  We encourage you to shop now while others are not thinking about it. (Thank us later).
  1. Visit very early in the morning to ensure that you snag the most stylish finds. Avoid peak hours which usually are between 2PM and 6PM.  Also, if you have little ones, try to find a sitter so that you can really focus without any interruptions.
  1. Try on each item of clothing, including shoes and accessories. Inspect each item carefully for imperfections that will require alterations or repairs.  If you are purchasing household items, please make sure to request assistance with finding an electrical outlet to test out the appliances/hardware.  Yes, they will provide you with a light-bulb to test out the vintage lamps.

We hope that you benefit from all the specials at your favorite Thrift Shops and don’t forget to use the hashtags #NationalThriftShopDay and #MODAGEStyle when posting your frugal finds on social media.

We’ll share ours with you on Friday in our Friday Five With MODAGE Style segment.

Enjoy!

Friday Five With MODAGE Style

Happy Friday Style Mavens! Great news, we wanted to start our weekly installment of Friday Five With MODAGE Style!  Each Friday, we will be sharing with you five things that we are truly obsessing over or inspired by lately.  Clearly, we refuse to keep all of this goodness to ourselves and would love to share the love. While reading our weekly posts, you’ll see that we are super passionate about three things: fashion, mindfulness and beautiful images.

Wrap dresses are a staple and they are the most flattering/forgiving item in any Style Maven’s wardrobe at this very moment.  We adore these wrap dresses by AsikereAfana.  They are the perfect style for every shape, providing classic curves. We plan to add both  dresses featured above to the MODAGE Style Armoire this Fall. Stay tuned.

Yaaaas, Weekend Love!  When there are no client appointments and we have time to relax, who would not gravitate towards a chic, comfort-savvy sandal with an ultra-cushioned footbed for easy all-day wear?  These are AfroPunk approved!

We love this burgundy lipstick by Stila and this may be the most universally flattering hue to date. This rich shade has a balm-like texture and peppermint oil for a refreshing tingle. We are all for wearing dark shades in the summer months, because we make our own rules.  Pucker up ladies and smile! xo

DC Goodwill Summer Trunk Show

Goodwill of Greater Washington will be celebrating the summer with a major trunk show at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery. The DC Goodwill Summer Trunk Show will operate from 11AM – 7PM on Thursday, August 25 and Friday, August 26. We had the pleasure of pulling fabulous resale pieces for sale for this event and we are beyond ecstatic! If you are available and in the area, feel free to secure your ticket here.

Goodwill DC has also decided to feature DIY items that have been transformed through Tim Kime’s workshops where many of them came from Goodwill (how freaking cool)! The exhibit is called The Art of Transformation Exhibit: Transformed, Upcycled, Functional Works of Art and the deets are listed below:

Tuesday-Friday, August 16 – August 19, 2016 12PM to 4PM
Saturday, August 20, 2016, 8AM-1PM
Pepco Edison Place Gallery
702 8th St NW Washington, DC 20068

I have been shopping at Goodwill for over twenty five years (before it was cool to say that you were a certified resale shopper).  Resale shopping is my therapy and I always walk away with new to you finds that spark conversations.  I like that I have the ability to create individual looks that screams freedom of expression.  It is all about having fun with fashion, especially while thrift store shopping!  I am a firm believer that you do not have to break the bank to look great. When traveling, it’s imperative that I schedule time to visit a Goodwill retail location in hopes of finding fabulous items to bring back with me in my suitcase.

Most recently, I snagged a silk Christian Dior polka dot print skirt while in Virginia and a vintage Diane von Furstenberg dress and Jimmy Choo sandals while resale shopping in Maryland.

High End Goodwill Finds

The items that I curated for Goodwill’s upcoming Popup Shop would be ideal for Sunday brunch and would be considered appropriate for the office as well.  It’s all about modern essentials that can be styled in unconventional ways, while infusing a splash of edge into the mix.  We also pulled a few pieces for those who appreciate a simplistic approach to style which involves all casual wear that can be put together in no time.
