Question From The Queen of Frugal: Help, I need your assistance! I’ve been obsessed with the military inspired jackets for years but I never knew how I would pair them. They are plentiful in my local thrift store, especially in the men’s section. I’m really going to purchase one when I attend the Style Tour, but I need some fashion insight. Should I add studs to the collar, distress the jacket or add leather sleeves for an edgy vibe? Lerkia, how would you wear the military inspired look? I’m sure you’ll add a twist of vintage inspiration to your military chic look.
My Response: Dear Queen of Frugal. I too am entertaining creating a look to compliment a camouflage jacket/shirt that I purchased over the weekend. I snagged one that has “Lee” on the jacket – how fabulous, right? Perfect for a crisp Fall morning while running errands, dashing to yoga or meeting your girl’s for Sunday brunch. I am not sure how I plan to pair my newly acquired $6 find, because it requires a bit of TLC first. It’s way too big, but I see potential!
There are so many DIY options for customizing a military jacket. Here are a few ideas on how to wear your jacket. I love how some have incorporated vintage brooches, boyfriend jeans, and belts to create a city chic vibe to such a rugged piece. I’ll be sure to post a picture of my military inspired look soon. Endless pairings, indeed!
Also, I love this DIY tutorial on adding studs to a camo jacket for some serious edge.
I love to travel and since my daughter is an adult now, I have more time to explore the world. Traveling broadens my mind, feeds my soul and provides inspiration for upcoming projects. Inspired by my dream vacation destinations, I’ve drawn up the ultimate travel bucket list. My goal is visit each of the listed destinations within the next three years.
I’m motivated and will turn my travel list into my reality. After watching Eat Pray Love again this weekend, I was inspired and wanted to share my “MODAGE Approved Travel Bucket List.”
Johannesburg, South Africa
South Pacific Islands
The Great Wall
Bora Bora, Tahiti
Marble Cathedral, Patagonia, Chile
I hope that this post inspires you to journal at least 20 minutes this week in hopes of reflecting on your “dream” destination vacation spots. One of my favorite quotes is, “We must take adventures in order to know where we truly belong.” Feel free to Tweet me your #1 “must visit” vacation destination.
Are any of these destinations on your travel bucket list? If so, what were your favorites?
The 2014 Fall/Winter Haute Couture collections kicked off Monday in Paris and we will be featuring our favorite looks each day on the blog. Today, feast your eyes on a few of my favorite looks compliments of Giambattista Valli. Infused with stripes, fun florals, bandannas, sunnies and an “around the way girl” vibe, I absolutely adore this collection.
It’s summertime and the living is a little bit easier and relaxing. Over the weekend, I surveyed the gently worn bookshelves of my local Goodwill in hopes of finding a few breezy books to be enjoyed poolside or at the beach. Summer reads are the perfect entertainment under the sun and I can’t imagine not having a steamy romance novel or timeless classics in my tote.
While thrifting, if you find a book that catches your eye, Google the title to see what others have to say about the book.
In total, I spent $8 for all 6 books, and my 2014 Summer Chic-List reads include:
Here’s a bit of inspiration: While on the MODAGE Style | Goodwill Summer Shopping Tour, snag a pair of distressed or high waist jeans to recreate these two looks. You will be surprised what an X-Acto knife, tweezers, sandpaper, patience and scissors will allow you to create.
Invite your girls over for a DIY Party and snap pictures wearing your “New To You” creations. I’m seriously considering hosting a DIY Fashion Happy Hour in DC. I would love for all of my Fashionistas to join me in wearing one of their creations for a chance to win a Style Maven fitted tee and to be featured on the blog.
Flawless skin, bright lips and striking eyes continue to dominate city sidewalks and international runways. Here are a few Summer makeup trends that aren’t going away anytime soon.
Alternative cat eye
Maybe the standard cat eye is getting a little played out; however, there are plenty of ways to spice up this Summer trending look. Alternatives to the standard include the double lined cat eye, a hollow cat eye and a multicolored cat eye (with white, hues of hot pink and perhaps green eye liner).
Now that it is summertime bright lip colors that are orange, purple and pink are in. Contrary to the berries of the Fall, the bright oranges and other colors can help give you a warm and fun summertime feel. The best way to wear this look during the day is with a soft eye and natural makeup, to bring focus to the lips. Of course, it can be spiced up at night with a flawless cat eye.
There is nothing like having the look of sun kissed skin even when the beach is miles away and you’re stuck in the office. By exfoliating and highlighting the t-zone and cheek bones can give the perfect summer glow without sitting in the sun. Also, be sure to prep your skin with sunblock and to try and use products that will assist with protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays. I personally adore Clarins Splendours Shimmering Body Oil.
